PhD Stand For


According to Webster’s dictionary, simply put, a PhD stands for doctor of philosophy.  This can refer to the actual academic program at a university or one that holds the degree. For academic purposes, PhD refers to the highest academic degree awarded in a specific subject. It can also be referred to as a terminal degree.


The specific requirements for earning a PhD will vary by subject matter and university. However, they all share common aspects. PhD students will take a series of courses and pass a comprehensive exam. They must also perform an original research study and write a dissertation of their findings. These findings will have to be defended in front of a board paneled by their university. Some programs will require that students also complete an internship or practicum.


With the advent of the internet and high speed connections, more and more universities are offering even their highest level degrees online. Some universities offer all of their subjects online. However, some universities will only offer specific programs. Be certain to check to see what your particular university offers. In addition, it is important to note that you may have to spend some amount of time on campus. This can be anywhere from a few days, a weekend, or a summer. Each university will have different ways on handling this requirement.
